Described as the “Princess of Amapiano” by Billboard, Lungelihle Zwane, born on March 30, 2000, known professionally as Uncle Waffles, is a Swazi-born DJ and record producer based in South Africa.
Having learned how to DJ during the COVID-19 lockdown, her journey to stardom is characterized by grace and talent. When asked to fill in for a withdrawn DJ at a club in Soweto, a viral video of her dancing to the global hit song “Adiwele” paved the way for her ascent to greatness.
Following these viral moments, Uncle Waffles ventured into music production and released her debut single, “Tanzania,” which was ranked the 8th best Afropop song of 2022 by Rolling Stones.
Her success story is incomplete without mentioning great feats such as her UK and Ireland tour in 2022, DJ residency on BBC Radio, DJ performance at the 2022 Global Citizen Festival in Accra, and concert tours of the USA and Australia. Her second EP, “Asylum,” achieved Gold certification by the Recording Industry of South Africa in its first week of release.
Uncle Waffles is not only a DJ; she is also a business-oriented person, demonstrated by her partnership with KFC South Africa to launch an exclusive “Uncle Waffles Burger.”
Her remarkable growth is met with several accolades. In 2022, she won the award for Best African DJ at the African Muzik Magazine Awards. Additionally, she earned the prestigious Woman of the Year Award at the 2023 GQ Men of the Year Awards and is currently nominated as the Best African Act at the 2023 MOBO Awards.
